DMF RW-1013 Railgear Equipment
DMF RW-1013 railgear is designed for application to pickup and SUV chassis from 6,400 to 10,000 lbs. GVWR. Chassis up to 11,500 can be accommodated with our extended payload package. It is only applicable to vehicles with single rear wheels. RW-1013’s adjustable suspension, easy operation, and numerous safety and convenience features provide a smooth and sure ride.
The RW-1013 railgear typically stows within the length of the vehicle, eliminating the maneuvering and parking problems long associated with hi-rail vehicles. Without railgear protruding in front and behind, working around the vehicle is easier than ever. Access to the truck bed or rear hatch is not affected.
RW-1013 is hydraulically operated from a control panel in the cab or by switches at the front and rear of the vehicle. A rotary actuator moves the railgear from the nearly hidden stowed position to the rail position in seconds.
RW-1013 uses a rubber torsion suspension at each guidewheel to improve on-rail ride and negotiate track features such as guarded frogs. Both rubber and steel tread guidewheels are available.
On RW-1013 equipped vehicles, all vehicle tires ride on the rail allowing the railgear to be lighter, minimizing the impact on payload. This requires aftermarket wheel kits on full-sized pickups and cab chassis. The smaller Durango and Dakota can be used with factory wheel/tire offerings.

Please refer to our Application Guide or contact DMF for details on ordering chassis. We can provide advice on what options are most suitable for hi-rail application. Some wheel options, fuel tanks arrangements, and other non-standard items such as auxiliary AC units can prevent or complicate installation.
Standard Features:

- Automatic Safety Pin-offs
- Rubber or Steel guide wheels
- Bumper mounted controls
- Derail skids
Optional Features:
- Cable Pin-offs
- In-cab controls
Safety Features:
The railgear incorporates safety features to address the possibility of hydraulic failures. The railgear is “over-center” in the rail position preventing a leak from allowing the railgear to move from the rail position. In the stowed position, our automatic “Safety Pin-offs” prevent the accidental deployment of the railgear due to a hydraulic leak. In the event of complete hydraulic failure, the system is equipped with an emergency hand pump to allow the vehicle to be removed from the rail.
Materials:
All structural members and brackets are constructed of carbon steel. The guidewheels are made from steel castings. Spindles are made from high strength alloys and use heavy duty tapered roller bearings.
Installation:
DMF RW-1013 railgear is mounted to the front and rear frame using tools common to any service shop or up-fitter. The front bumper is trimmed at the corners to allow for the front railgear to be stowed. In some applications, service bodies require modification to accommodate railgear. The installation kits come with a partially pre-assembled wiring harness that accommodates all chassis and simplifies installation.
Operation:
The vehicle is pulled onto a crossing and aligned with the track. The rear is closely aligned and deployed. The front is steered into alignment with the rail and deployed. Once the position of the railgear is verified, the operator returns to the cab, straightens the steering wheel and installs the steering wheel lock. The vehicle is ready to proceed. Getting off the rail can quickly be done from the cab.
NOTE: This is an abbreviated procedure, please consult the manual for complete step-by-step instructions and cautionary information regarding the operation of your hi-rail gear.
