Greater emphasis on operator aerial work platform safety was called for by Tim Whiteman, president of Aerial Work Platform Training and managing director of the International Powered Access Federation during his kickoff address to 200 participants at the inaugural Aerial Platform Safety Conference in Dallas.

He pointed out that the tremendous growth in the market has brought thousands of inexperienced boom lift and scissor lift operators on the scene, who can be unintentionally dangerous to themselves and their colleagues. Whiteman added that manufacturers also can contribute to better safety by standardizing emergency descent and other controls.
