UCT provides underground education at ICUEE
Published in: Underground Construction
Date: 9/1/2007
Underground Construction Technology, producer of the annual UCT Conference, has once again partnered with the biannual International Construction and Utility Equipment Exposition (ICUEE), to present a targeted educational program concentrating on the underground utilities infrastructure.
UCT first brought its industry-leading education program to the 2005 ICUEE. The 2007 sessions will be expanded to encompass even more of the critical topics and areas of high interest and importance to the underground construction market.
ICUEE 2007, also known as The Demo Expo, will be held Oct. 16-18, at the Kentucky Exposition Center in Louisville, KY, and feature hands-on working equipment demonstrations.
UCT is a sister organization to the underground construction industry’s top publication, Underground Construction. UCT is known for its industry-leading, benchmark educational programs offered at its annual conference and exhibition.
Attendees receive extra value by participating in a one-day, pre-show Advanced Horizontal Directional Drilling School on Monday, Oct. 15. The course is structured for both the seasoned driller wanting a refresher course as well as the novice seeking to improve knowledge and capabilities. It is structured to help utilities and engineers better understand application and efficient operation of HDD projects.
UCT sessions cover new technologies related to FTTX and electric equipment and underground utility equipment, fiber optic cable installation, private fiber, converting overhead to underground, matching compact equipment with utility application, pipebursting, mud mixing and recycling systems, evaluating used HDD rigs, new keyhole methods and service connections, enhancements for tools, vacs and coring equipment, a variety of HDD issues including its role in overbuilds and locating sewer laterals, and updates on OSHA underground construction programs.
Attendees can earn continuing education units or professional development hours for sessions, including the HDD Workshop.
Attendees can save time and money by registering in advance, with full details available online at www.icuee.com. Advance registration for ICUEE 2007 is $10 per person and closes Sept. 21. After that date, attendees must register onsite and that fee is $20.

Special Pro-Show Program: Advanced HDD Workshop
Description: This special day-long session will provide valuable tips and insights into the application and efficient operations of HDD projects. The presentation is structured to aid utilities and engineers in understanding the advantages, limitations and applications of a technology that increasingly is becoming the preferred installation method for underground construction. This special program is also applicable for seasoned drillers seeking a refresher course/update or inexperienced operators seeking to better understand the role of HDD in modern construction. After this workshop, attendees can then visit HDD equipment suppliers booths with an educated eye.
New Technology & Equipment: FTTX & Electric Description: With the increased construction activity in telecom, particularly fiber-to-the-premises, along with the electric market, refinements and new products are rapidly hitting the market to accommodate expanding needs. This session will highlight several specific technologies/equipment being displayed by ICUEE exhibitors, that have the potential to dramatically aid construction activities. Presentations will be made by: Ditch Witch, Astec, Sherman-Reilly, Hammerhead, Vermeer and McLaughlin.
What Every Engineer & Utility Needs To Know About HDD
Description: Directional drilling is no longer considered an emerging technology, yet many project owners and the engineers who design projects do not understand how HDD can be used to their benefit. Find out what planners need to know to specify HDD in more projects.
Converting Overhead To Underground
Description: Converting an aerial system to underground…it’s not always “too costly.” Learn what factors determine when costs of replacing aerial cable with new underground distribution can be justified.
New Technology & Equipment: General Underground Utility Equipment
Description: The gas distribution market is exploding along with other industries such as sewer and water. Many of the ICUEE underground exhibitors will be introducing products and technologies to enhance productivity in these markets including compact equipment, trenchers and rehabilitation products such as pipebursting. Attendees will learn about some of the leading new technology and equipment featured at the show. Presentations will be made by: Vermeer, Caterpillar, TT Technologies, McLaughin, Ditch Witch, Bobcat, Hammerhead and Astec.
HDD’s Role In Overbuilds: Skill vs. Dime-A-Dozen
Description: Telecommunications companies are “overbuilding” old systems with new fiber optic networks. While contracts for construction may be going to large contractors, directional drilling specialists can play a crucial role, especially on FTTX portions of project. Learn what project owners and contractors require of HDD subs.
Modern Methods For Installing Communications Fiber Optic Cable
Description: Contractors experienced in handling and pulling in underground cable are familiar with equipment and techniques. However, fiber optic cable installations are not the same. Learn how modern fiber “blowing” techniques can be the fastest, most-efficient method of placing fiber in ducts.
Pipebursting: Anytime, Any Place
Description: From its early beginnings as a static process for replacing sewer lines, the applications and methods of pipebursting has grown to now encompass virtually any type of pipe material. Learn how the technology could very well be applicable for your specific utility project.
Planning, Managing Installations With Modern Software Solutions
Description: There’s more to successful HDD operations than having the right equipment and knowing how to use it. Learn how project planning and the tools available for HDD work can increase the success rate of every installation and add to the bottom line.
FTTX Outlook
Description: Expansion of broadband connections to more and more end users continues to make headlines in business and construction publications. Find out how homes and small business are being connected and what to expect in the future.
Matching Compact Equipment With Utility Applications
Description: This session will bring valuable information about the versatility of an emerging class of construction equipment. Efficiency and diversity are critical components of this equipment that will ultimately make construction crews more productive. Operators will gain knowledge of how the equipment will reduce physical labor and maximize productivity by fully utilizing the capabilities of compact equipment.
Part 1: Mini skid steer loaders, trenchers
Part 2: Mini/compact reduced tail swing excavators, skid steers, compact loaders
HDD: Locating Sewer Laterals
Description: The Distribution Contractors Association HDD Committee will moderate a panel on responsibility for the location of sewer laterals prior to a directional drill. Among the items to be addressed will be identifying responsibility for the location, legislative activity and methods to resolve the problems that affect the safety of the crews, homeowners and the resulting damage.
Private Fiber
Description: FTTX usually is thought of in terms of bringing fiber to or near residential and business users. But much of today’s fiber deployment goes unnoticed as large corporations, government agencies and educational institutions install their own “private” fiber networks, and all or much of these systems are underground. Find out who building these projects and how subcontractors can be involved.
OSHA Construction Update
Description: An OSHA representative will provide an update on the status of pending programs such as confined space, along with other programs such as dealing with a multi-lingual workforce. Excavation safety will also be highlighted in this presentation.
Mud Mixing & Recycling Systems
Description: As the HDD industry evolves, the importance of proper mud mixing and cleaning has grown significantly. This session explores the proper techniques of cleaning and mixing drilling fluids, along with the critical need of matching the right mud system with your rig.
Enhancements For Tools, Vacs & Coring Equipment
